Is there a travel insurance policy that allows me to cancel with benefits if my traveling partner, a girlfriend, needs to cancel prior to departure due to a parent illness? I was told by Allianz that if she cancels, I will not be covered since it's not my parent.

That isn't true. Perhaps the policy you booked doesn't offer but many do depending on how it was booked. Are you both listed on the same reservation? You need to look at a policy that states you or a travel companion have to cancel for a covered reason. If you are in the same cabin, that is considered a travel companion. There are also some that cover the increase fee you would pay if you decided to travel without your companion. However if the medical condition is pre-existing and you didn't buy it within the appropriate time frame - no one will be covered if you have to cancel.

Here is what another companies policy shows for trip cancellation:

TRIP CANCELLATION
Benefits will be paid, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Confirmation of Benefits, to
reimburse You for the amount of the Published Penalties and unused non-refundable Prepaid
Payments You paid for Travel Arrangements when You are prevented from taking Your Trip due to:
1. Your, Your Family Member’s, Your Traveling Companion’s, Your Traveling Companion’s
Family Member,
Your Business Partner’s or Your Business Partners Family Member’s death,
which occurs before departure on Your Trip;
2. Your, Your Family Member’s, Your Traveling Companion’s, Your Traveling Companion’s
Family Member,
Your Business Partner’s or Your Business Partners Family Member’s
covered Sickness or Injury, which: a) occurs before departure on Your Trip, b) requires
Medical Treatment at the time of cancellation resulting in medically imposed restrictions, as
certified by a Legally Qualified Physician, and c) and prevents Your participation in the Trip;

Traveling Companion” means a person or persons whose names appear with Yours on the
same Travel Arrangements and who, during Your Trip, will
accompany You.

This particular policy also covers the Single Supplement if you decide to travel without your travel companion:

Single Supplement
Benefits will be paid, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount, for the additional cost incurred as a result
of a change in the per person occupancy rate for Prepaid Travel Arrangements if a Traveling
Companion’s or Family Member’s Trip is canceled for a covered reason and You do not cancel
Your Trip.

Call any insurance company you considered and ask specifically their definition of travel companion.

Did you already buy this policy within the time frame to cover pre-ex conditions?

We are on different flights and traveling from different cities. But we are sharing one room at a resort in Cancun for six nights

That might be the problem. Do you both have separate confirmations? As this particular policy states,

Traveling Companion” means a person or persons whose names appear with Yours on the
same Travel Arrangements
and who, during Your Trip, will
accompany You.

Yes. Different flight confirmations because we’re traveling from different cities. Both of our names are on the resort reservation.

You should only be able to put in a claim for the resort, not the air unfortunately, as long as the confirmation is the same number for both of you and both are shown on that reservation.

When you called Allianze did you tell them the room is in both your names? What is their definition of travel companion?

I will call the resort and make sure both of our names are on the reservation. I believe they are. The Insurance arrangements were made within the allotted time frame. We actually still have a few days left. And I will call the insurance company once again regarding the term ‘traveling companion’.

This is from Travel Insured's Worldwide Trip Policy

You need to produce an invoice showing both you and the person you are traveling with on the same invoice.
