I am booking a Lufthansa flight with United miles (Europe to USA) and using Chase United Mileage Plus credit card. Both airlines are Star Alliance members. Lufthansa wants to charge me for advance seat selection. I have used other Star members, mostly Air Canada, and have never been asked to pay for seat selection. Anyone exeprienced same and what was the resolution. Thus far, not only is United not forthcoming with a response, they did not seem to know if there is even a policy...told me "I guess that's the way it is." Help!
Thanks.

Lufthansa always charges for advance seating if you are booking an economy ticket. Many European Airlines do. You can either pay or wait until 24 hours before your flight for a seat assignment.

Being part of the Star Alliance has nothing to do with advance seat assignments. If it’s an airlines policy to pay for advance assignments, it’s their policy.

Is this an economy class booking? Lufthansa gives seat selection free to its high level flyers.

Using an affinity card for another airline gets you no consideration and same with using miles from another airline-- not for seat fees.

Either pay the fee or select at check in, those are the only choices

And please stay on top of your reservation to fix any problems before they're unfixable. Code-shares/alliances are a terrific idea and when they work well, they're great. But sometimes they do not work well. Once you are ticketed, keep a close eye on everything.
