I rented a car in Nevada 5 months ago. During the rental, someone scratched the back bumper. There were two deep scratches but no other damage. Upon return, I pointed out the damage to the agent (I knew it wouldn't be overlooked). I told her I didn't know what happened but I signed the damage form and she said someone would get back with me.

So far, I've heard nothing. I know it can sometimes take a very long time to hear back, but is that typical? Is there ever a time I can know that I'll probably never hear from them? Or do I just keep nervously checking the mail every day?

If you haven’t heard anything it’s a good sign but it isn’t impossible that you could see the car company come after you in another month or two. The damage may have been within the companies acceptable allowance.

The only problem you would have is if they come back to you now and you haven’t notified your insurance company. Many require notification within 21 days or so.

I agree about the insurance but I'm hoping, if I do hear something, it comes in below the deductible. I've been stashing money every paycheck so it won't hurt too badly if the worst happens!! If only there were a statute of limitations.... I'm tired of not knowing but I surely don't want to contact them.
