UPDATE:
For those who do not want to click on the link (totally understand that) or cannot access the article through the link, here is the general synopsis:
The east coast storm brought havoc to JFK where flights were delayed or cancelled. This led to a huge pile of luggage that was not sent along with the passengers. The airlines have little incentive to spend the time or expense to have luggage meet up with their owners, even after the Port Authority implored airlines to expedite luggage delivery. There is very little regulation about delayed luggage so airlines are not quick to send luggage via cargo or another airline as that is an added cost to the airline with no way of re-capture. The article mentions how difficult it is to get reimbursement for essentials purchased while a passenger is separated from his/her luggage as there is no set rule for compensation. Delta was the most proactive airline, bringing in baggage handlers from other airports to help with the onslaught of luggage. They even trucked some of the bags to LaGuardia to be placed on flights.
