What validity date(s) was listed on the ticket itself? From what I see with images online, most tickets seem to clearly identify either how long they are good for (one day/two day), or have a validity period listed.
No doubt all the info was in German and might have had the day/month format that they didn't understand.

I have stayed many times at Intercity hotels in Frankfurt (not airport) and Dusseldorf. Every the travel card had the day of arrival on it thru the day of departure. It sounds like the clerk did not put departure day on ticket. Never had to get new card each day.
