Good morning Mr. Elliott,

My name is Tracy Piorier and I was hoping you might be able to help or guide me with a travel situation.

Me and three of my friends are booked to go to the Grand Palladium Palace Resort Spa & Casino All Inclusive in Punta Cana - October/2019.

The 4 of us are wanting to cancel because of all of the news/deaths we have been hearing about in regards to the Dominican Republic.

We booked the vacation through Global Booking Solutions.

Global communicated to us that we can cancel the resort part of our package and pay $75.00 but we would have to work with American Airlines to see if they would allow us to cancel our flight for this trip.

When we called American Airlines and asked if we could cancel our flights for our trip in October, they communicated that they are only cancelling flights going to the Dominican Republic through August 2019.

We explained to American our concerns with going to the Dominican Republic in October and they said they are unable to do anything for us.

Also, they wouldn't give us any more details to why October flights doesn't fall in to the cancellation time frame.

Also, a frustrating part is that we see on the news that Delta Airlines has offered to anyone flying to the Dominican Republic, a chance to cancel/reschedule their flights.

I was hoping you could help/answer two questions for me, please.

1 - do you feel its safe/not safe at this time to go to the Dominican Republic in October 2019?

2 - is there anything we can do or say to American Airlines, in regards to our travel situation?

Any help/assistance would be so appreciated and I would be very grateful.

Thank you so much for your time.

Have a wonderful day.

Tracy Piorier

Unfortunately AA is one of the airlines that is just not waiving fees to move flights to another area. Other airlines (Delta) did. Did you by any chance purchase a Cancel for Any Reason insurance policy? That would help if you had that in reimbursing you for changes.

Hundreds of thousands of travelers have continued vacationing in the DR with no issues at all since these reports began. I would go if I were already booked but would make sure I didn’t use the mini bar, don’t get drunk and don’t go off property (which we advise our clients anyway traveling to the DR)

If you don’t want to pay the penalties to change your flights and hotel somewhere else, there really isn’t much choice. You can wait and see if AA changes their stance but if there are no other reports of problems, or the FBI finds no evidence of foul play, I’m not sure AA would change their stance.

Use this as a reminder in the future that booking the least expensive flights aren’t necessarily the best. AA is our most complained about company here- Delta, much less so.

And consider travel insurance - the only type that would help in this instance is CFAR. You can also call the credit card you used to book your trip and see if they offer any coverage for this .

What type of tickets are included with your package? If the tickets are basic economy, AA (and the other airlines) do not allow any changes or refunds.

Not sure the Delta comparison is good as they are also only allowing cancellations until August 15th that exact same as American

AA is offering the exact same as Delta so being on Delta would not help you at all

Why not wait and see if there is an extension
Christina has it exactly right, Tracy. You have two choices (unless your air tix are basic). 1) you can wait until the second half of August to see if AA extends the free cancellation/change option. 2) you can research the situation carefully and take the trip, paying close attention to others' experiences.

Remember that the media exists to sell advertising, and the more lurid their "bad news" is, the happier they are. If your air tix are "basic" then you either use them or lose them, I'm sorry to say. The one ray of light is any travel insurance included with the credit card used to make the original purchase. If it were me, I'd read everything available in the next month or so, hoping that the situation will get resolved and whatever is causing all these awful deaths and sickness is found and corrected. Good luck, and please keep us posted.

Please stop feeding into the myth that there's some big mysterious new threat in the DR. While each of these cases is certainly devastating for those who have lost their loved ones, the media are deliberately lumping together incidents that took place months apart in completely different areas of the country to make it look like there's some kind of crisis. The only crisis is the willingness of the American public to buy into this incredibly dishonest click-bait hype.

I'd also add that I don't think it's at all unsafe to go off-property in the DR as long as you're with an organized tour or in an official taxi called by the resort. I've done it many many times. You can, for example, take a taxi to a nearby shopping center and go shopping or eat out (there are even nightspots). What I would not do is to rent a car and drive on my own. The roads in the Punta Cana area are not well marked, and it's confusing. Plus, it's just difficult to drive in the DR.

According to the Foreign Office (UK), as of 2017:

According to the figures from January 2016 to January 2017, holidaymakers were much more likely to be killed than sexually assaulted.

The Foreign Office figures revealed Pakistan is the country with the highest number of murders or manslaughters with 15 deaths recorded in a 12 month period.

Next most dangerous country was the USA with seven fatalities
Should Britons avoid the US? Probably not... But when you travel, always be aware of your surroundings, wherever you are.

Agreed, Jamaica is probably just as bad crime-wise, yet lots of tourists go there and have a great time. Just follow the simple rules. If you go off resort, do it as pairs at a minimum during the day, sign up for group tours via the resort. Use bottled water for everything including brushing your teeth. Eat cooked food, less likely to get sick. Avoid salads since they are probably washed with local water. Whole fruits like bananas, oranges etc are good. If you have a drink at the bar, watch the bartender as he makes it, and keep it under your control at all times. Enjoy the resort.
